Hawaiian Pizza Recipe (Homemade)

Pizza is one of the most popular foods around the world, and everyone has a favourite type of pizza or at least their favourite toppings on the pizza.  There are so many combinations of toppings you could use it is astounding, just when you think you thought of them another combination will spring to your mind.  The most traditional toppings (at least in North America) are cheese, pepperoni, veggie and meat lovers.

I intentionally left out one because it is very divisive, Hawaiian pizza toppings include pineapple, ham and or bacon.  Hawaiian pizza ingredients are typically those mentioned above but the good thing with pizza is you can put whatever you want on it. The main point of contention with Hawaiian pizza is the pineapple on it, some love it and some find pineapple on pizza disgusting.  The pineapple gives the pizza a sweet taste that offsets the saltiness of the ham and or bacon.  It is hard to blame someone for their like or dislike of pizza because we all have foods that we don't like or at least don't think belong together.  Hawaiian pizza is magical and in our house, it is the pizza of choice.  We are going to walk you through how to make your pizza from scratch, this was our first attempt at homemade pizza and the end result was fantastic so we decided to share our recipe.  Now if you're not a fan of pineapple on your pizza you can substitute the toppings with whatever you prefer, but give the pineapple a chance, especially if you have never tried it.

 HAWAIIAN PIZZA INGREDIENTS:

HAWAIIAN PIZZA TOPPINGS:

  • 1/2 cup pizza sauce
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
  • 1/2 can pineapple tidbits
  • 1/2 cup ham, sliced into bite-size
  • 4 strips bacon, cooked and sliced
  • 1/2 portion pizza dough (homemade)
HOMEMADE PIZZA DOUGH
  • 1 1/3 cups of lukewarm water
  • 2 1/4 tsp. instant yeast
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp. olive oil
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • cornmeal for dusting the pan

PROCEDURE:

MAKING THE DOUGH

  1. Start by making the homemade pizza dough. Whisk lukewarm water, instant yeast and granulated sugar in a bowl and cover it with cling wrap or cloth towel and let it rest for 5 minutes. You can do this in a stand mixer if available or manually with a spatula or wooden spoon.
  2. After 5 minutes, add olive oil, salt and all-purpose flour to the mixture. Beat the mixture at low speed for about 2 -3 minutes in the mixer, then knead it in the mixer at low speed until it slowly bounce back which means it is ready to rise. If a stand mixer is not available, you can knead the dough with floured hands for about 4 minutes or until it slowly bounce back if poked.
  3. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and turn it around to coat all sides with oil. Cover it with cling wrap or a towel and let it rise for about 60-90 minutes or until the size is doubled.
  4. Once the dough size is doubled or is ready, punch it down to release air bubbles. Cut it into half. You can either make two pizzas or you can choose to freeze the other half and use it in another day.
  5. Lightly flour a surface and a rolling pin and flatten the dough. Then lay the dough on a prepared greased pan, with cornmeal sprinkled and flatten, stretch and shape it with your lightly floured hands. Lift the edges of the dough to create a rim.
  6. Cover the prepared crust. Let the dough rest for a few minutes while preparing the toppings of your choice.

PUTTING THE TOPPINGS
  1. Preheat the oven to 475° Fahrenheit while preparing the toppings (at least 20 minutes).
  2. After a few minutes and your toppings are ready, brush the dough lightly with olive oil and press down the dough lightly to prevent bubbling.
  3. Pour the pizza sauce and evenly spread it over the dough. Sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese generously over the dough and add some cheddar cheese if you prefer to.
  4. Then, add the sliced ham, bacon and pineapple tidbits distributing it evenly.
  5. Bake pizza in the preheated oven for at least 15-18 minutes.
  6. Remove from oven. Slice and enjoy it while it's hot.

I hope you enjoyed the pizza you made, and remember can put whatever you want on a pizza.  You can take our recipe and substitute almost anything on it to make the pizza slightly or very different.  Stay tuned for some more recipes and let us know what you think and how your pizza turned out and what you put on it.
